Three New
Cohorts in 2006-2007!
TIMeS is introducing
three cohorts in 2006-2007. K-2 teachers will be
joining us periodically during the year for face-to-face
training with Lynn, Rae and others. Teachers in grades
3-8 will have access to the same type of curriculum-aligned,
project-based, hands-on training, but through self-paced
online modules. Check them out in the
Workshops area by clicking the link
on the left. We're also pleased to be continuing with
several of our teacher-leaders from last year to implement an
assessment program, ThinkLink, a predictive ISATs testing
system that enables teachers to tailor their instruction to
individual students' needs.

Math, Science...and Literacy?
What's the connection?
Although
everyone recognizes the link between math and science, many people
don't seem to realize that literacy, the ability to read and write,
is a critical pre-condition for success in both those fields. Many
math teachers can trace their students' difficulties back to
difficulties reading the questions. By the same
token, although many people recall science textbooks as dense and
full of challenging vocabulary that can make comprehension
difficult, fewer recognize the unique challenges presented by
scientific writing. One way to improve student
learning is to utilize cross-curricular lessons and inquiry
learning, which attempt to situate new concepts in concrete
situations that are relevant to the students. This way, all three
foundational subjects can be strengthened at the same time.
